Panic exhibition opening night

Now then, my last post documenting the Panic exhibition was hardly in depth so here is a slightly better go at it.


The exhibition was a resounding success in the fact it was busy, the work was well received and everything looked very professional. A few of us even got asked for our work (I wasn't amongst those asked, except for by my parents. I'm not sure that counts) and I think someone got asked to do a series of book covers as a result of the exhibition? Again, that person wasn't me so I'm not entirely sure how it happened but congrats to who ever it was.


Massive thanks to the people involved with getting it organised and Caitlin for her brilliant promotional posters and flyers. 


If  I have learned anything about making work for an exhibition it's ask what other people are doing, or at least check their websites/blogs etc, not to influence your work, but just to see what the general feel of each piece is and whether yours will fit or clash with that feel. I think I'd have been super panicked if I hadn't had a look at the other pieces, since mine was coming from quite a different angle.


Secondly, make an effort to have a look at the work when the exhibition isn't rammed full (i.e. go back after the opening night) Although it's nice to have a full exhibition room it doesn't make it easy to view the work when there is a crowded room.

Panic (again)

Show opening was last night, got drunk, spoke to some peeps, went out, got even more drunk, stumbled about in font and 42's and continued my drunkenness. Was ace, we should have more shows

Panic exhibition tonight

After spending more than a couple of hours painting, sticking, measuring and sweeping yesterday the 3rd year D&AD show is finally ready to be seen by the public. 


Hopefully there will be a good turn out tonight, I know that a lot of the people exhibiting have gone home but there should still be more than a few people making an appearance and bringing folk along.


My work has a cracking position in the corner next to some pretty snazzy work by Belle Stevens and Stacey Syer.

Next project

Even though my previous project is far from finished I have started to put some thought to my next work. After my tutorial on Thursday I had a decent idea of what I wanted to do and the last few days have seen me mull it over in my head whilst getting some odds and ends tied up.
The idea behind my new project is to combine everything I like and enjoy into one. So, the design practices that I enjoy are image making, typography, layouts and grids systems, book design and fabrication. I'm not saying any of these are my speciality but they are what I enjoy doing and the idea of doing something I don't enjoy makes no sense. 
So what will this typographic book with set grid systems and a variety of images be detailing? Basically everything else I love, Wes Anderson Films, the music of Broken Social Scene, Postal Service, Death Cab For Cutie, Modest Mouse etc, riding bikes, cooking, Rugby, T-shirts, Summer, the sea, drawing, singing badly, walks in the countryside, traveling, bad jokes, in-jokes, alliteration, word play, the environment, the cities of Swansea and Manchester, hating on trains, new things, collecting junk, putting up posters, going out, sombreros, my box of shoes, new books , good jeans, good friends and a I'm sure more than a few other things may get the nod before I'm done.
Other than making a book (working title is 'A Guide To.....') I also need to make some business cards and a website, make a journal, sell and print some T-shirts and before all that I need to go see the work I shall be exhibiting at Noiselab Manchester from Tuesday to Saturday this week.

PANIC, MAGAZINES!

Been a while since my last update, to be honest I'm not entirely sure when it was but anything more than 2 days is a year in blog time. Blog time is closely linked to dog years I think.


Since then I have had a radical overhaul (read slight redesign) of my magazine spreads. Am in the process of getting 30 or so different variations mocked up for the cover and spreads, have got the cover and 1 set of spreads ready, just need to do a contents and another set of spreads.


Also have in the last few hours turned my Animals Of Farthing Wood themed Panic project into something a lot nicer to look at, look at it here of course it's still not finished, my colours are way out of line. Need to make the reds redder, greens greener and blues, yes you guessed it bluer. Other than that not much to do except play about with paper stocks and get it printed ready to be handed in on Friday.


On a different yet slightly related note I left my gallant steed (bent and rusty bicycle) in my house for about a day and a half and upon my return I realised it was covered in tiny spiders so not entirely sure how much I want to campaign for protection of the animals anymore if they're just going to start messing my stuff up.

PANIC!

We (3rd year D&AD) are having a show based upon the theme of panic coming up soon, we are meant to be showing a rough version of what we're doing today so I pulled this together over a few export strength Guinness's last night. I was much happier with it last night than I am this morning, probably something to do with the aforementioned Guinness but hey, it was St.Patricks day and it's only a rough.

All the little woodland creatures are meant to make a face and there will be some type talking about woodland areas being taken over by evil conglomerates added at a later point once I've repositioned everything and changed the background out (that was never staying, it was just an experiment). The panic part of the brief is answered by the panic of the poor little animals worrying (in fact panicking) about where they will live, and then people worrying about how we have squandered all our countries areas of beauty and nature in an effort to get more supermarkets.

I think this piece is heavily influenced by the greatest kids TV show/books ever 'The Animals Of Farthing Wood', what can I say, I was an impressionable child.
