Dogboarding

Nothing like coming from home work, grabbing your dog and going skateboarding. Have a peek at this funny little edit. It kept me amused

Happy Birthday Boo

It's my oldest sister Becky/Boo's 30th birthday this year, quite distressing as that means I'm 25 this year... anyhow it seems my main contribution to the family is making birthday cards and this year is no exception. I quite like this one though. Knocked the typeface up myself and might actually use it for some book covers I'm making.

Hand drawn type

Been playing around with some hand drawn type for Issue 5 of OWT zine, the theme is atmosphere so I have started to make these pieces, at the moment they're lyrics to songs or just stuff thought up as I was writing, will move onto a better message if I decide to pursue this aesthetic.

Venn Diagrams

Nothing to do with my work at the moment. Just thought of it and thought it would be fun to do. How right I was.
I guess it is due to the fact that I have finished all the essays and assignments for tomorrows hand ina nd actually feel pretty good about them. I might even clap my hands.

New & Improved, again.

Been working away on a variety of projects recently. Personal work, freelance, MA studying, designing the student union and a couple of shifts on the weekend making cocktails for the people of manchester.

So here's how each of them is going.

Personal work is making sketchbooks, drawing and sketching, writing down quotes from the millions of films I've seen recently.

Freelance work for The Access Project is going swimmingly with an amended version of their booklet available to be seen by clicking this lengthy sentence right here.

MA studying comprises of myself trawling the internet for articles about the replacement of printed design by more modern devices and debating whether or not that a 20 word article written on a Spanish blog will be a viable reference point.

Designing the union is taking its time and more updates on that will be coming soon.

I am partcularly happy to announce my work with Stephen Bean, Kat Currie, Sarah Stapleton and Jon Hananananananananaaan on OWT creative is gathering steam. Check out our new blog here.

As for making cocktails I make a great fruit daiquiri.

Enough from me, enjoy the bank holiday

The Access Project

As my work placement draws to an end I can safely say that Gyro:Hsr is a very nice, easy going yet highly professional place to work. Unfortunately, it's not for me I don't think. Would like to try my hand in the print industry for a while at least.

On the subject of print a new version of The Access Project PR booklet is underway. Just need a few images and quotes to round it off. Hope it drums up lot's of support for the guys there.

Also my project with redesigning the union starts monday, cleaning, painting, conceptualising and all kinds of designerly stuff is going to be going off. Can't wait. The vomit inducing colourways of previous examples are being sorted, the imagery is also being sorted, it's an exciting time.

Finally go to www.owtcreative.com to see what Manchesters premier design collective looks like.

EDIT: you may notice that I have started to switch between fonts for my posts. Typography is an expression of how you feel when writing as well as what you're writing. Helvetica isn't fun, interesting or even particularly readable. It's council housing for letters (or maybe that's Arial?) either way, Times is easier to read, traditional and due some good press. Helvetica can go do one. Next week I shall be resurrecting comic sans from font purgatory...

A Different Approach

As you may have noticed I have been attempting to make some map based notebooks recently. Due to the fact I'm not allowed to use University equipment whilst in between my now finished degree course and yet to start MA course I have had to make do with some slightly odd equipment in an effort to bind my notebooks....I think my sourcing of household items and converting them into book binding equipment is a triumph and  if your bookbinding kit doesn't include a hammer, a nail, a flip flop, an old mousemat and a jar of pennies you're doing it wrong.

Here is just a snippet of the equipment pressed into action

Top Secret

I can't tell you what this is for, but it's going to be awesome and I am very thankful to Mr. Scanlon for asking me to get involved. More details to come

A Present From Me To Me

To celebrate graduating, being allowed onto the MA course and getting myself some work experience I thought I'd spend some hard scrounged cash. Here is the result, maybe not the best thing to have bought considering my bike needs new brakes, my printer needs ink and my attempts at finding part time work aren't exactly going to plan. However, treating myself to a fresh batch of printer inks is hardly exciting so a fresh pair of Vans Akat trainers from the lovely people at Thomas Street Post Office in the Northern Quarter was the solution. Now I just need to wait for the rain to go away so I can take a stroll in them without them getting ruined.

I am also working on a series of notebooks that shall hopefully be finished soon, just need to wait for a 1952 map of America to arrive from ebay....more details to come

More stuff

Just some ideas building on the logos from a few days back, now with added input and a different (probably temporary) brand name and aesthetic.

Vans Vault X Brooks Saddles

I like Vans shoes a lot, and I like Brooks saddles a lot. I also like collaborations that actually work together, so when Vans and Brooks got together and produced my favourite shoe for cycling in, the vans era, in a limited edition colour and materials that perfectly matches up to an equally limited edition Brooks leather saddle with custom detailing and all kinds of lovely presentation boxes I was pretty gutted that I can't afford the set. If you want to be my friend for life you could do a lot worse than get me the set.

See some more images of the collaboration here

Tour De France

Inbetween job hunting, getting lost in the town centre and sorting out various options with M.A's and work experience I have also been watching as much of the Tour De France as possible. Not too many people find the tour a whole lot fo fun to watch but they're missing out. A huge amount of tactics, team work and individual ability is involved and trying to predict the stage winners is a laugh.

I also saw this lovely illustration from I Love Dust the other day. Lots of designers enjoy riding bikes and as a result there are plenty of posters, T-shirts and  illustrations revolving around the Tour getting produced this time of year.

Websitezzzzzzz

I'm not a web designer, don't pretend to be. I could make you a lovely looking template, but the actual planning isn't something I excel at. So in light of this my new website isn't a website at all it's just another blog made to look like a website. Go to www.kither.tumblr.com for my website goodness. At a later date i shall make further inroads to making a proper website but for now this is just dandy. Enjoy.

Service shall remain as usual over here, but an online portfolio shall be found over on tumblr. Keep it real

Degree show postcard mk.2

More work centric, which makes sense. Hopefully shows more about what my work is like. Now to print it out and take it to uni!

Time

Feeling that my latest works are all too self absorbed, and more importantly they were annoying me and I fancied doing something else for a bit I spent last night making the poster below. Due to a combination of  stupidity and a lack of effort the photo is on its side. Oh well

The poster was made for the Don't Panic competition and revolves around the idea of Albert Einsteins quote 'Sit with a pretty girl for an hour and it feels like a minute, sit on a hot stove for a minute and it feels like a minute'. The word Don't Panic want us to work with is time, and I think it fits nicely.

In other news my 'Why I Hate Trains...' second draft isn't going to plan and neither is much of anything else. Thursday (the day before hand in) will be fun. For now though I'm off for a few chilled beers in my friends garden whilst I write learning agreements and catch up with some chat. Life is far too short to be worrying about such trivial things as sketchbooks when the sun is shining.

More volcano stuff

In an effort to put off uni work, but still do something vaguely creative I have been decorating my sisters new place and scouring vimeo for cool videos.

Iceland, Eyjafjallajökull - May 1st and 2nd, 2010 from Sean Stiegemeier on Vimeo.

This is one of the better finds, lovely time lapse video with Jonsi (of Sigur Ros fame) singing in the background, truth be told I kind of lost interest in doing anything design related when i found out about the TV show Man Vs Food.

The premise of the show is : host goes to american city, eats the regions best fried chicken/pizza/burgers/bbq/burrito at a selection of diners then goes on to do a ridiculous eating challenge that normally involves some sort of burger bigger than his head. Unlike normal food shows that just make me feel hungry, Man Vs Food manages to go straight past that to making me feel ill after watching a man eat 9 pounds of beef in about 3 minutes. It's Tv at it's best
